Important beyond New York CityI think that this is an important move for New York City, and I hope it will offer a model for the rest of the country. It’s not about an employer being kept from making a living. I strongly believe they deserve our understanding — a business, especially one owned independently, is not easy to run well and still make a decent living. But workers, wherever they are, are real people who have real lives. They too need to be treated with dignity, to feel as if they are appreciated as more than a powerless chess piece to move around as needed. And the good news is it can turn into a powerful win-win.Workers who are treated well show their appreciation by giving their employer respect — along with their best efforts. That not only feels better for everyone involved, it shows up in the quality of the product / service as well as in the owner’s pocket.
