If you are facing an upcoming interview for a job, then you might be feeling concerned about the questions that you will be asked. This is especially true if you have never interviewed before or if it has been a long time since your last interview. It’s normal to feel a little out of your element or uncomfortable with the process of being interviewed. When you learn common interview questions that might be asked, it will help you to prepare for the interview with confidence.
You can then go into your appointment feeling prepared about what and how you will answer the questions that you are asked. Here are some common interview questions:
• Tell me about yourself.
• Why did you leave your last job?
• What experience do you have in this field?
• Why do you want to work this job/position/etc?
• Do you consider yourself to be successful?
• What would co-workers say about you?
• What would a previous boss say about you?
• What do you know about this organization/company/etc?
• How have you taken steps to improve your knowledge over the past year?
• Are you applying for jobs with other companies?
• Do you know anyone who works for us?
• What kind of salary do you need?
• Are you considered a team player?
• If you had the money to retire right now, would you?
• How long would you expect to work for us if you were hired?
• How would you be an asset to this corporation?
• What bothers you about co-workers?
• Why do you feel we should hire you?
• What are your greatest strengths? (Sometimes asked singularly as “What is your greatest strength?”)
• Why do you think you would do well at this job?
• What are you looking for in a job?
• What kind of person do you work well with?
• What kind of person do you not work well with?
• Tell me about a problem you’ve had in the past with a supervisor or boss.
• Which is more important to you- the money or the work?
• What motivates you to do your best at a job?
• Will you work overtime? Nights? Weekends?
Many of the questions you can be asked in an interview are referred to as “loaded” questions. This means there is no real right or wrong answer that the interviewer is looking for. Instead, they are looking to see how you answer the question and how you perform under pressure.
This doesn’t mean that every one of these questions will definitely be asked but it does mean that you have a good basis on which to prepare for your interview. Each appointment can vary according to who is interviewing you and what position you are being interviewed for. How much background information the interviewer has about you can also impact the questions that you are asked. However, this is a good basis to get you started.
