Salary Negotiation

When interviewing, there is a salary scale that is going to be available which is normally dependent upon the skill level and experience of the applicant. When you are chosen to fill the position, you are going to be offered a salary. Normally, you are going to be low balled. What this means is that the company is going to offer you the lowest salary that they think you are going to accept.

You should never go with the first offer you receive; there is always room for salary negotiation. There are a few tips to getting the salary you want without losing the position completely. You want to get fair compensation without the company deciding you are asking for too much.

Interviews and Salary

– It can be difficult discussing salary at an interview. The interviewer may ask you what you feel you are worth. One thing you can do is research the position and what the low and high end for this position is and come up with an amount that you can live with. If you feel that you can be comfortable at the low end, at least start a bit high so the company can negotiate you down. In some cases, if you really feel you deserve a better compensation package than the company is willing to offer you, you can simply say no and thank them for their time. If they really want to hire, they may negotiate your salary after the interview.

If you are not comfortable discussing salary during the interview because you feel there is too much pressure, or because you have no idea what a good amount to start with would be, you can always ask the interviewer to give you some time to think about what they are offering you and if you think it is fair compensation. Many times, this tactic alone can get you a better offer.

– This is when the negotiation process can either bring you more money, or can crush your hopes of working for the company. It is important to be flexible when negotiating if you really need to be hired right away. You may have to settle for a lower amount with perks or benefits to make up for the lack of monetary compensation. Those who are in no hurry or who are currently employed, may be able to take more time to negotiate the salary that they want without any ramifications.

At the end of the day, it is up to the applicant to determine how much their time is worth. If you do not feel that the compensation is worth the job you are going to be doing, then you should ask for more money. In many cases, the company is going to negotiate with you. In some cases, simply saying no to their offer is enough to get a better offer from them. If the company really wants to employ you, you are going to get a new offer and possibly more than you originally wanted. If they’re not willing to pay you what you seek, do you really want to work for them anyway?
