The fashion industry is constantly in flux as trends change from season to season. A skilled designer may be wonderfully creative and have all the qualifications of a talented fashion designer, but still in need of a great designer resume to land the perfect job with the company of his or her choice. Starting with a few well chosen words in the objective segment of the resume right through to listing a designer’s education and training, a well crafted designer resume can set one candidate worlds apart from the competition.
Designer Resume – Objective Statement
This one simple statement can be the difference in whether or not a prospective employer will take the time to review the rest of a resume. Especially in the field of fashion, it is important to make good use of buzz words, as these types of positions are always reliant on Madison Avenue advertising hype. Pull out all stops and make this one statement create a desire in the employer to read what you have to offer. Be as creative with words as you are with fashion and you’re halfway home.
Designer Resume – Skills and Qualifications
Some fashion designers are wonderful artists while others have an aptitude with a needle and thread. Any qualification that highlights skills that would set you apart from the competition should be listed here. An example of skills and/or qualifications on a designer resume might include being current in trends from New York, Paris and London. Perhaps the applicant is well versed in design software and has an extensive knowledge of color orientation and harmony techniques.
Professional Experience for a Designer Resume
Listed in reverse chronological order, each professional position held within the past five to ten years should be listed here if it is directly related to the position being sought as a fashion designer. Unless the applicant is fresh out of school and there are no related jobs which can be listed, only jobs in fashion and/or design would be pertinent. Even working as an apprentice constitutes work experience and should be listed. Internships at fashion houses around the globe can also be listed with any responsibilities, even if the position was part of training and not a paid assignment.
Responsibilities for a Designer Resume
Perhaps you were a member of a team that researched current trends in London or Paris; by all means list that as a responsibility. Or maybe you were the person in charge of purchasing fabrics from suppliers. Anything related to design should be summarized. Whether that position was as an administrative assistant to the lead designer or as an intern who designed trousers for the fall line, every duty can be highlighted.
Educational Requirements for a Fashion Designer
Most designers begin with a Bachelor of Fine Arts or a Bachelor of Science in Fine Arts, and go on to graduate studies in Fashion Design. Beginning with the highest level of education and working in reverse order, list all educational degrees and certifications pertinent to the field of design. For example, if you went to real estate school and became licensed as a real estate sales agent to pay tuition to go to graduate school, that certification isn’t necessary to include on this designer resume. Keep your resume short and to the point for the best results.
