At one point or another in our lifetimes, we have all heard the word ‘Distributor’ in relation to the company that provides products to our local retail stores. However, most of us aren’t aware of how much activity goes on behind the scenes just to get our favorite foods on the shelves of grocery stores, and how some stores carry certain products but others don’t. It all boils down to the fact that most manufacturers do not ship directly to retail outlets.
Careers in Distribution
In fact, it is safe to say that 99.99% of all products sold in the United States go through a distribution company. Because there are so many positions within this type of company, a distribution resume must make it perfectly clear what type of job the candidate is seeking. Employment in distribution is available in sales and marketing on the front end of the company. Then there are warehouse jobs in the back end. Of course each of those areas has a support staff under them, so that job possibilities are almost infinite.
Distribution Resume Objective Statement
Use the objective statement to make understood which area of a distribution company you are seeking employment in. For example, the warehouse end of operations requires stockers, forklift and other heavy machinery operators, office clerks who keep track of inventory, truck drivers, maintenance crews to keep machines operational and the list goes on. The objective statement of a distribution resume is one or two short sentences stating your goal in getting a position as a stock person, or forklift operator, or any other position in the front or back end of a distribution company.
Qualifications for a Distribution Resume
When listing qualifications, only list skills that are pertinent to the job you are seeking. They should be itemized in list or bullet format and they should be quite short and to the point. For instance, a person looking for a position in the warehouse as a truck driver might list having a professional CDL operator’s license, the ability to drive 18 wheelers over long distances, the ability to be on the road for days at a stretch, and other qualifications or skills that would make him/her capable of driving a truck to and from distant retail outlets.
Distribution Resume – Professional Experience and Responsibilities
Any time a resume is submitted to a prospective employer, it is vital to focus on professional experience and the responsibilities that came with each job. In this section of a distribution resume, previous jobs will be listed in reverse chronological order with the current or most recent job first and a list of responsibilities immediately following. Then, the next job in line follows the same format. Job applicants, for example, who have worked in warehouses operating forklifts and heavy machinery should list that work history here. Directly under the job, specific duties are detailed such as the exact type of machinery operated and other responsibilities that were part of the job description.
Educational Requirements for a Distribution Resume
The education segment of a distribution resume is generally the final area. Some jobs in distribution, such as a marketing manager, may require an MBA (Master’s in Business Administration), while a job in the warehouse as a stock clerk may only require a high school diploma. Just as professional history was listed in reverse sequence, so too is education, beginning with the highest level of degree first and working backwards if needed.
