Of all fields of engineering, a facilities engineer may be the least understood. This occupation is mainly involved in the building of varied systems that propel a plant used for manufacturing, and is responsible for the development and maintenance of those systems. Some of these systems include, but are not limited to, control of climate, sources of power, or lighting and water needs. While this individual will have an engineering background, he or she will also need to be educated in the product or products being manufactured at that facility. A resume for a facilities engineer would necessarily need to address both those aspects.
Facilities Engineer Resume – Objective Statement
In presenting the objective statement, it is important to give a clear message that as a facilities engineer he or she is looking to supervise projects or programs integral to the operation of that company. An objective statement gives the applicant very few words to stoke the interest of the reviewer. Express an interest in the company and highlight personal goals in such a way as to grab the desired attention. ‘Highly experienced facilities engineer seeking a position in a textile manufacturing company looking to transition to eco-friendly, biodegradable power.’ This candidate is not only an engineer, but also has expertise in textiles and sustainable energy. All that is gleaned from one short objective statement.
Facilities Engineer Resume – Qualifications and Skills
Having a skill in the proper management and maintenance of systems and the programs used by the company is vital. However, above and beyond those qualifications, this portion of the resume allows the candidate to cite specific skills or characteristics that would not necessarily be part and parcel of work history or educational background. For instance, a facilities engineer would be ‘highly analytical,’ and able to ‘project future needs in production.’ Any inherent personal characteristics or personality traits should be listed here, ‘excellent in time management and interpersonal communications.’ Perhaps the candidate is proficient in CAD software, Excel and MS Project. Skills that can be brought to the job should be mentioned here.
Professional Experience for a Facilities Engineer Resume
A facilities engineer actually needs to be experienced in areas like supervising and managing the technical aspects of a given project, and maintaining records that will later be used to scrutinize or analyze the project’s budget, and whether or not it was met. This candidate should also have experience in areas of delegating tasks and working with a team of technicians. Any jobs that pertain to this field should be listed in reverse chronological order beginning with the most recent and working backwards from there. Immediately following each job, list specific duties that were carried out in that capacity. For instance, negotiating with vendors, drawing up blueprints and schematics and overseeing the design, construction and maintenance of a new manufacturing plant.
Education Requirements for a Facilities Engineer Resume
While it is possible to gain employment as a facilities engineer with just a Bachelor’s degree and perhaps some work-related experience, this particular position may also require some graduate work. Many times a Master’s degree in mechanical or civil engineering is required, and/or a minor emphasis on the product or products being manufactured. For example, a facilities engineer responsible for designing and maintaining a plant that manufactures biofuel such as ethanol would probably need a degree in both sustainable energy and engineering. List all degrees beginning with the highest level achieved and work backwards chronologically. Include the names of the universities attended, the dates of attendance and any research projects of note.
All of this information needs to be listed on a resume that is no longer than a page, two at the most. Depending on how extensive a background the job candidate has, this may be a difficult endeavor.
