If a resume is not properly written, it is going to be bypassed by every potential employer leaving the writer wondering why they are not getting any calls for an interview. Recruiters do not spend much time on a resume and it usually only takes one glance for them to know if they are going to spend the extra seconds to read it through. In fact, most recruiters claim that they only spend less than a minute to briefly scan a resume before they make the decision on whether to read it more thoroughly. For this reason, it is important to know exactly what is being scanned for when writing a resume so the mistakes that are going to send the resume to the garbage bin are not made.
Grammar and Punctuation –
As soon as a grammatical error is seen, the resume is dead. There is not one recruiter who is going to hire someone who cannot even write properly. This shows them that the candidate is not paying attention to details and makes for a very poor first impression. Make sure that you are using the correct punctuation and do not use explanation points. There is no reason why you need to punctuate one point this way when you want the entire resume to be brilliant. If you use an exclamation point, you are basically saying that this is the only sentence that is important and the rest is not. It’s a method of trying too hard to make a point in the resume when great points should make themselves.
Use the spell check on your word processing program to make sure that there are no spelling errors which is also a big resume killer. Also, use the proper form of words that sound similar but which are spelled differently and that have different meanings. For instance, there is a big difference between ‘their’, ‘they’re’ and ‘there’. Using the wrong form of the word to convey a meaning is just as bad as misspelling the word. These small errors may seem like common mistakes and they are. But those who really want their resume to shine should never make these mistakes.
Sentence Structure –
Those who have problems with writing a properly structured sentence can turn on their grammar software in their word processors. Microsoft Word has a great grammar check that allows users to see when they are using a fragmented or run-on sentence. Remember to convey one thought per sentence and have it lead into the next one for a nice flow. When using a list, have bullet points and each list item should be a full sentence too.
The previous tips are going to stand you in a better light with the recruiters who are reading the resume. They want to see that you pay attention to details and if you do not take the time to proofread your resume, you may not get any call backs. If you do not have grammatical or writing skills, have someone else proofread your resume before you submit. Make sure they know that you want total honesty so they do not placate you.
