After getting your degree and doing your internship, you may be ready to move on to a real paying job that can offer the chance at a long term career. It can be difficult to get your foot in the door when you are new to the workforce. Because you are lacking in experience, you need to offer the company something that someone who does have experience lacks. One way to get a job fast is by writing a fantastic cover letter to enhance your short resume. After writing the cover letter and resume, there are a few tips that can put you on the top of the interview list.
Hand Deliver the Cover Letter and Resume
Instead of emailing the documents, which admittedly is much easier, personally drop them off to the person who is going to conduct the interviews. If you have done your research before writing the cover letter, you are going to know that person by name. When you go into the office, ask the receptionist if he/she is in and give the resume to them directly. This puts your name and face in their mind and they are going to remember you out of all of the emailed resumes that they receive because of this.
After Delivering the Resume and Cover Letter
One mistake that many make is not following up on a resume. Admittedly, you are probably putting in more than one resume so you may just think you need to sit back and wait for one of the jobs to pan out. This is not the most pro active way to get a position with any company. After you deliver the resume and cover letter, call back and find out what the status is. You want to keep your name fresh in the mind of the interviewer and they are going to notice your eagerness if you use this ploy.
Send a Thank You Note
If you have not heard back anything after calling the company, in a week, you can send a thank you note followed by another phone call. The thank you note need only express your gratefulness in allowing you to apply for the job. This should also be done after the interview. Anything you can do to keep your name ahead of other candidates is never going to be a bad thing. A phone call a week until you know that the position is filled is not going to be considered ‘bugging’ the person who is doing the interviewing and shows that you are ready to go to work.
Simply following these three tips are going to make it easier for you to get a job quicker after you write the best cover letter and resume possible. You need to keep your name at the front of the company’s human resource department or the person who is doing the hiring’s mind. The best way to do this is by putting a face to the name by dropping off the documents instead of emailing them. Make sure to follow up with a phone call.
