Are you wondering how to dress for an interview? If you have a job interview coming up, you may be wondering what to wear to make the best impression. You want to look professional, but you don’t want to look as interesting as a blank wall. You don’t know whether to dress down, or whether your little black dress is appropriate. Before you make your final decision, learn how to dress for an interview by reading the tips below.
Of course, most people have the sense to know what NOT to wear to a job interview. Jeans, shorts, flip flops, and t-shirts are definitely out of the question, but you also want to avoid clothes that are suggestive or meant for a dinner party.
1. No unnecessary “accessories.”
Before we get to what type of clothes you should wear, there are a few “extras” you should never bring to an interview. These include your cell phone, iPod, and gum. Also, if you have piercings or tattoos, take your rings out and cover any visible tattoos.
2. Go for a business-like appearance.
You want to look stylish, but you don’t want to look like a stiff corporate executive. For women, a black, navy or grey suit with knee-length skirt works well. Women should also wear neutral colored stockings and shoes, and avoid platform shoes or spike heels. For men, a solid-color suit in a dark color paired with a white or coordinated shirt and tie is perfect. Socks should be dark as well, and both men and women should avoid excessive jewelry.
3. Avoid bare legs and feet.
Going to an interview with no panty hose (for women) or socks (for men) screams “unprofessional.” In order to maintain a business-like appearance, it is essential that you wear stockings or socks and close-toed shoes, no sandals.
4. Avoid wild hair styles.
When you go to meet with a potential employer, you do not want to give the impression that you are “wild” or a party animal. Wear your hair in a conservative style; men should wear a shorter length hairstyle that is groomed well, women should avoid spikes, braids and hairstyles that look overdone.
5. Hands make an impression.
Many people talk with their hands, and use them to demonstrate their point. Both women and men should avoid fingernails that are too long. Make sure your nails are well groomed and clean; men should keep nails clipped short, and women should have nails that are either short or a conservative length. Avoid dark or bright nail polish as well.
Men and women should avoid excessive cologne, aftershave and perfume. In order to present yourself in a more professional manner, carry your portfolio or briefcase with you to the interview. Consider trying on your interview clothes and having them pressed and ready the day before the interview, so that you don’t experience any unexpected surprises such as wrinkles or a missing button.
The guidelines above explain how to dress for an interview. Put them to good use, and make your best impression ever!
