Where should the resume education section be included on your resume, and how much information should it include? These are some commonly asked questions by those who have never created a resume, and even by some who have. If you want to build a resume that looks professional and attracts the eye of a potential employer, you want to create a resume education section that helps you outshine the competition.
How to decide where to place your resume education section
Top or bottom? This is the question of many. Either one is acceptable, but where you place this information depends largely on what it is you are trying to emphasize most. Are you trying to impress upon the employer that your education background pertains to the position in question, or that your work experience will directly benefit the company in some way?
The easiest way to choose is to think of your education and work history. If you have plenty of work experience related to the position for which you are applying, employers will be more interested in these details than in your education. Therefore, you want to include the education section of your resume at the bottom of the page.
If you have just graduated college or have very little work experience, your resume education section would be more effective when placed at the top. Also, if you are making a career change and have attended school or training in order to further your new career goals, this information should be placed at the top of the page.
What should be included in the resume education section?
With any resume, you do not want to go in to too much detail, unless you are a recent college graduate. Summarize information as much as possible to keep things brief, and to make it easy for a potential employer to read.
If you are a recent college graduate, include your grade point average if it is 3.0 or higher, along with course work, areas of study and honors. Also, leave out any information pertaining to high school if you do have a degree.
You should also include any vocational or technical training in the resume education section, along with information about high school if the training was brief, and lasted only one year or less.
If you have been out of college or high school for a few years, less information should be included. Now, you have more work experience building in your favor, so going in to details about grade point average, minors, course work, etc. isn’t necessary.
Any certificates, licenses or other credentials should be included IF they are related in some way to the job for which you are applying.
When creating the resume education section, include courses, seminars, conferences and the like only if you feel that you are lacking in the education department. This information may be impressive enough for a potential employer to overlook the lack of a formal degree.
