One of the strangest things for many university students to comprehend is the need to submit a resume to the graduate school he or she is thinking of attending. However, some of those spots are highly competitive, and good grades aren’t always enough to get into a graduate program. Even students who earn a Bachelor’s Degree, Magna Cum Laude, don’t always get accepted into the graduate program of their choice. Because of this, it is vital to submit a well crafted resume along with a letter of intent to the graduate program in question, early the semester prior to graduation from a four year university.
Education Resume – Objective Statement
The objective on an education resume is obviously why you want to attend that particular graduate school and what your goals are in the future. For example, an education resume to graduate school might read, ‘To obtain an M.B.A. from Georgia Tech because of its high scholastic ranking, with the hope of pursuing a lucrative career in Business Management.’
Education Resume – Qualifications and Skills
This portion of an education resume can work hand in hand with the educational portion. Qualifications and skills might highlight degrees and certifications listed below. For example, a student who earned a Bachelor’s in Science might want to add that qualifications include exceptional marketing skills, goal oriented performer, exceptional organizational skills, and other things of that nature. Getting accepted into an esteemed university is no easy feat, and the more you have to offer, the easier it will be.
Professional Experience for an Education Resume
While many students may have never had a job, either full time or part time, for those students who have subsidized college fees and tuitions with a job should use this area of an education resume to list work experience. Once out of grad school and ready to hit the job market, the types of jobs listed here will matter a great deal. At the moment, most graduate schools don’t expect a lengthy job history, but showing a sense of responsibility will speak highly of a student’s work ethics. Beginning with the most recent job, list all professional experience in reverse order. Of course, if any jobs in management or marketing would be beneficial to entrance into grad school, work history at this point in a student’s career isn’t 100% necessary.
Previous Education and Degrees
While the highest degree may not yet be achieved, the education portion of the resume would probably begin with a Bachelor’s Degree. If the student is still in the final semester, the years attended would be listed as 2007 – present, or the years in which the student attended each upper level school. Many students also include one extra section just under education to list accolades or achievements. Again, because graduate school is so highly competitive, the more awards and achievements that can be listed, the more favorably your resume will be received.
Good grades and the ability to pay the high cost of tuition are often not enough to get accepted into grad school. Your resume must stand out from hundreds of others competing for a handful of spots in the program. Articles and education resume samples on this site can give prospective grad students a place to start when compiling their resume.
