Resumes with modern designs are best for job applicants who want to exude a bold and pioneering yet professional approach. Their sleek designs include pops of color, ample white space and clear section headings, making them eye-catching and easy to read by both applicant tracking systems (ATS) — which scan resumes for relevance — and judicious employers.

How to format a modern resume
- Choose one of three standard resume formats: chronological, combination, or functional. Each one organizes resumes differently, depending on a candidate’s work experience, goals, level of expertise, skill set and industry. For example, if you’ve never had a job, then the chronological format won’t work for you because its focus is on work experience. A functional resume could benefit you, however, because it highlights your learned skills.
- Pay attention to details. You can’t just use any of the dozens of fonts available on your word processing software. The most appropriate fonts for resume writing are Arial, Times New Roman, Calibri and Verdana. Use the standard 12-point size for maximum legibility, although anywhere from 10-12 points is acceptable (as long as it’s easy to read!), according to experts. Margins should also be no smaller than ½ inch and no wider than 1 inch to ensure your resume is clean and appears effortless for ATS software to scan. Resume Now’s professionally designed modern-resume templates are all formatted to be easy to read by both software and human eyes.
- Don’t overdo it. Keep your resume to one or two pages. Any longer than that and you risk the hiring manager tossing it aside for a more concise resume. Hiring managers tend to be very busy, and they often get hundreds of resumes a day, so consider that you only have a few minutes to make a great impression and get their attention.
- Skip the extras. Leave out any photos, references, hobbies and interests that aren’t directly relevant to the position. This also means avoiding nicknames, personal social media links and biographies. Modern resumes are a bit bold and colorful, but irrelevant graphics and information just look unprofessional.
4 tips for writing a modern resume
Customize your resume for the job. There’s no way around it: All job applicants must write a brand-new resume every time they apply for a job. It’s essential! Review the job description as you write each resume and focus on the defined requirements that match your skills and work experience, then describe how you have used those qualifications in the past.
List your most recent and relevant work experience.Only include the most appropriate positions from the last five to ten years. If you don’t have any work experience, then list any pertinent volunteer roles, internships, apprenticeships, and relevant school or community projects, and don’t forget to emphasize your transferable and applicable soft skills in sections above those experiences.
Make your point.Remember, hiring managers see hundreds of resumes a day, so you have to be succinct when writing yours. One way to do this is to use bullets to highlight your key strengths and achievements. Another way is to quantify your accomplishments with numbers. For example, if you’re a project manager, you might say you have “Increased efficiency of the production process by 40%.”
Proofread!Double-check your resume to make sure it has no spelling and grammatical errors, typos, inconsistencies, false statements, and missing information. Oh, and be sure your contact information is accurate so the hiring manager can reach you for an interview!
